Auschwitz was a very moving and sad place to visit.
Of course you have all seen the sign Arbeit Macht Frei, Work will make you free,
at the gate.... but it never did.
The vast numbers of people killed here
is mind boggling as is the very thought that a people could do this to another
group! Many of the victims were Czech, Poles, Romas (Gypsies) and
Hungarians who were political prisoners, Priests and other religions, but
of course there was an effort on Hitler's part to eradicate the whole Jewish
population.
For anyone to think that this didn't happen, they would have to defy this evidence.... too overwhelming to imagine!
We also visited Birkenau, Auschwitz II,
where the
sorting of prisoners was done, and where 100,000 were housed, 10 to a bed, 1000
to a barrack, and from which they went out to work each day. The average
time a person lived after arriving here was 3 months..... those unfit to
work, pregant women, children, old men and women, were killed immediately, and
fit younger people were housed there.
Life there was incredibly difficult, unimaginable!
