Zagreb was to be a business stop, dinner with two
flow cytometry colleagues to arrange a collaboration to help them launch a
Croatian Flow Cytometry Group and bring training to them there, and to talk to
them about joining FloCyte as instructors! But it turned out to be much
more! a SOCCER highlight of our trip! We happened to pick a hotel on
the main square Jelacic, the main square of Croatia, you might say! On the
night they played Germany in the Euro2008 European Soccer Championships that
happen only every 4 years! They had won one game and were playing the
second in their qualification rounds to join the quarterfinals and they were
successful!! The square was covered with revelers!!
And the game
broadcast on every screen in the city, I'm sure! Here is the sight from
our 5th floor perch above the square.
These soccer fans were rabid!! But it was great to see them win!
After the game we did enjoy a wonderful traditional Croatian meal with Rudjer, one of our flow colleagues, and in the AM, a walking tour of the old city, markets, cathedral, and city sites.
Fruits, clothing flowers, cheeses.... everything
you can imagine!
