Clinical Laboratory Scientist I

 Multiple shifts; multiple departments

Job Summary

Reports to Operations Supervisor, Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Manager.  Under limited supervision incumbent(s) will use their training in medical technology to perform clinical lab testing and/or other scientific examinations.  Required to work independent of immediate supervision and assume the initiative for prompt and accurate performance of tests with appropriate documentation and proper notification of abnormal results.  This is considered an entry level position and is the first of a two level job family.

 

Job Requirements

 

 

1.  A Bachelors of Science degree in medical technology or biological sciences from an accredited college or university. 

2. A current California state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license to perform laboratory testing. 

3.  Zero to three year’s direct experience in a laboratory setting. 

4.  Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills such as word processing, statistical analysis, and laboratory information system.

5.  Zero or up to 4 years flow experience. Can standardize instrument, perform QC and PM. Some instrument and assay troubleshooting. Abnormal hematology experience. Can titer antibodies, perform basic validations.

Instrumentation and Assays

6 Coulter XLs and 2 BD FACScans. May be getting a FACS Aria later on this year.

 

Assay performed in the department are:  

4 color leukemias/lymphomas (CD45 gating), both surface marking and intracellular marking.   We have a high volume process, requiring multi-tasking, abnormal morphology, on and offline analysis (we use Expo software). Ability to correlate morphology and histograms and ability to identify small abnormal populations on flow.  

4 color HIV panels. We have a high volume process using Coulter Tetra One reagents and software. It is automated and interfaced to our LIS.  

2 color HLA B27 (BD FACScan with autoloader)

Anti-platelet antibody assay. Home brew method high volume. 

Anti-neutrophil antibody.

red cell CD55/CD59 assay for PNH

Oxidative burst

DNA Histograms paraffin blocks and blood and bone marrow. BD FACScan using Modfit analysis software.  

We also perform HPLC hemoglobinopathy evaluation and interpretation, IEF, HLA B27 and Narcolepsy by PCR.
